The Elvet area of Durham is a popular area for students due to its proximity to the centre of the city, and University facilities. It is the location of the Elvet Riverside lecture theatres, and also many department buildings on Old Elvet. Elvet is also home to the university students' union, the DSU, and the university boat club (DUBC). There are a variety of pubs in the local area, including the Half Moon Inn, The Swan and Three Cygnets, and the New Inn up the main hill towards the science site, where a large proportion of student lectures are held, and the main library is situated. While Elvet is convenient for classes, it is less populated by students than areas such as the Viaduct.

Student accommodation in Neville Cross can be fantastic value for money. Neville's Cross is a 10 minute walk from the viaduct (although up hill), 15 minutes from the town centre and 20 minutes from the science site. On a Durham scale this is a long way, but if you like a bit of exercise or have a bike, you can save a lot of money by living here!

Student houses in Neville's Cross are a lot cheaper and some real bargains can be found. Ideal for members of St Aidan's, Mary's, Van Mildert and Trevs, it is no more than 5/10 minutes from these colleges. With the popular Duke of Wellington close by, here you can have a nice sunday roast or take part in the monday or wednesday pub quiz.

The viaduct is a popular location for student houses in Durham, with over 200 properties available, the majority are 4-6 beds. The viaduct is perfectly located close to north road, bars, clubs and shops with the science site a short 15minutes walk.

Although located slightly further from a number of Durham University colleges, the viaduct is also ideal for this reason where slightly more independence can be found.
